"Who Killed The Electric Car?" at Hillsdale Library

Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the the documentary Who Killed The Electric Car? on Wednesday, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale.

In 1996 electric cars began to appear on roads all over California. They were quiet and fast produced no exhaust and ran without gasoline. Ten years later these futuristic cars were almost entirely gone. What happened?

Each month, CARE shows a socially responsible film at the main meeting room of the library. Donations are gratefully accepted and proceeds go toward the purchase of equipment for the library. Our current goal is the purchase of a color printer.

"How To Save The World" at Hillsdale Library

Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the the documentary How To Save The World: One Man, One Cow, One Planet on Wednesday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale. How To Save The World is A film about the revival of an arcane farming method in India, the fight of subsistence farmers for food sovereignty in the face of bio-colonialism of corporations like Monsanto and one elderly gentleman who is being called the new Gandhi.

Each month, CARE shows a socially responsible film at the main meeting room of the library. Donations are gratefully accepted and proceeds go toward the purchase of equipment for the library. Our current goal is the purchase of a color printer.

Peace Coalition presents "Grapes of Wrath" at Hillsdale Library

The Hillsdale County Coalition for Peace & Justice is proud to present the classic John Ford film "The Grapes Of Wrath" at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14 at in the main conference room of the Hillsdale Public Library.

Adapted by Nunnally Johnson from John Steinbeck's classic novel, the film tells a simple story about Oklahoma farmers leaving the depression-era dustbowl for the promised land of California.

Admission is free, but donations will be gladly accepted to help support the Coalition's efforts in presenting the seventh annual Peace & Music Festival in Jonesville's Carl Fast Park on August 9. For more information, please visit the HCC4P&J website at www.hcc4pandj.org/


"E2: Energy" continues at Hillsdale Library

Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the the PBS series E2: Energy on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hillsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale. Last month, CARE presented the first three half-hour episodes of the series' first season. Next Wednesday, CARE invites you to view the remaining three episodes. The Green Party of Michigan is currently distributing personal ballots to all state party members to determine the preference of the membership regarding our party's 2008 Presidential candidate. Sicko is Michael Moore's look at health care in the United States as provided by profit-oriented health maintenance organizations (HMOs) compared to free, universal care in Canada, the U.K., and France.

HC Greens select new SCC Delegate
January 22, 2008

At the our most recent regular monthly meeting, the Hillsdale County Greens selected Sean Munn as our new delegate to the State Central Committee (SCC) of the Green Party of Michigan. Official business of the state party is optimally conducted in person by the rank and file at quarterly State Membership Meetings. Between those meetings, the SCC, composed of two delegates from each Green Party local and all state officers, performs that function, usually via e-mail discussion lists.

Sean replaces Randy Baker, who could no longer continue as SCC Rep. He joins our other current SCC Delegate, Richard Wunsch, as Hillsdale County's representatives to the Green Party of Michigan.

At our most recent monthly membership meeting, the Hillsdale County Greens welcomed new member Bonnie DeRose to our ranks. Bonnie is a local activist who's grown tired of politics as usual, and who can blame her? We're glad she's recognized the Green Party as a bonafide alternative to the status quo.

Many of us have already come to know and respect Bonnie for her hard work in the Hillsdale County Coalition for Peace and Justice, and we look forward to working with her as a Green.

"Sacred Planet" Documentary at Hillsdale Library

Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the Walt Disney film Sacred Planet on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale. According to Amazon.com, Sacred Planet, narrated by actor Robert Redford, "transports you to some of the most fascinating, exotic, and remote sites on Earth, giving you new insights into her diverse landscapes, peoples, and animals."

November CARE Film Cancelled
November 22, 2007

Due to a death in the family of CARE host Al Haslam, November's film has been cancelled. Each month, CARE (Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment), shows a socially responsible film at the main meeting room of the library. Donations are gratefully accepted and proceeds go toward donations in the library's name to progressive organizations, as well as toward the purchase of equipment for the library.

On a more positive note, thanks to the generosity of Al, his fellow volunteers and the public participants in the montly CARE films and discussions, our library now has a new digital projector! Funds will now be used to purchase a new color printer for the facility.

Green Party of Michigan State Membership Meeting
October 25, 2007

The next quarterly State Membership Meeting of the Green Party of Michigan will be held on Saturday, November 17 at the Hopewell Baptist Church, 756 Highland Avenue, Benton Harbor, Michigan. The agenda will include reports and discussion of the 2008 Green election campaigns, and will feature the Reverend Edward Pinkney, a social activist and advocate for justice in Benton Harbor.

The Hillsdale County Greens are currently organizing a carpool to transport local area Greens to and from the Benton Harbor meeting. Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the John F. Ince documentary Time Bomb: America's Debt Crises on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale. TIME-BOMB is a powerful new documentary that puts the spotlight on America's exploding national debt and the fact that our leaders are risking our economic future through shortsighted fiscal policies.

As I write these words, Hillsdale County Green Richard Wunsch is on his way back from Denver to return home and recover from recent lung surgery. He has been up several times and is, according to wife Donna, "quite steady on his feet." He does, however, get short of breath easily, which is to be expected, given the circumstances.

I hope everyone will join me in offering our best wishes to Richard and his family. Welcome home, Richard!

Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the Robert Greenwald documentary Unconstitutional: The War On Our Civil Liberties on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale. The film makes an eloquent case for the careful interpretation of Constitutional law, exploring rising opposition to Patriot Act abuses while exposing how many of our freedoms have been undermined in the name of post-9/11 security..

Hillsdale County Greens welcome new member

The Hillsdale County Greens are happy to welcome Sean Munn to our local, and to the Green Party of Michigan! Sean is a former Trustee of the Bellevue City Council who recently returned back home to the Hillsdale County area and discovered our local by visiting the HC Greens table at the Peace Fest in August.

Our most recent monthly meeting on Monday served as an introduction for both Sean and the HC Greens, and it's clear that, with his political experience and progressive voice, he will be a valuable asset to our local. We look forward to working with Sean as we continue to grow.


Local Green recovering from surgery

Hillsdale County Green Richard Wunsch is recovering from recent surgery in Denver, Colorado. According to relatives, he is eating well and is in good spirits, and is reading intermittently and watching the news.

An address for well-wishers will be provided on this website as soon as available. Efforts are underway to set up a laptop internet connection in Richard's hospital room so he can more directly communicate with friends and family. We all miss him and wish him a speedy recovery!

Concerned Aware Responsible Entertainment (CARE) will host a free showing of the Woody Guthrie documentary This Machine Kills Fascists on Wednesday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Community Library, 11 East Bacon Street in Hilldsale. The life of the great American folksinger is detailed in this 160-minute documentary narrated by singer Billy Bragg. Director Stephen Gammond gives us the cradle-to-grave view of Woody Guthrie as told by those who knew him.

Ice Cream Fundraiser Cancelled
August 19, 2007

Unfortunately, partly because of rotten weather but mostly because of street construction, the HC Greens ice cream fundraiser scheduled for this afternoon has been cancelled. Not only is the street in front of the Annex torn up and blocked off, the construction crews have also blocked off all nearby parking venues. So we will re-schedule a fundraiser in the near future, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Ice Cream Fundraiser Scheduled For August

The Hillsdale County Greens will hold a fundraiser from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19 at the Hillsdale Annex, 98 Broad Street in Hillsdale. $5 for a generous serving (or two) of ice cream with choice of toppings. Green party literature and merchandise will be available and potential Green Party candidates are encouraged to attend.


Local Greens Win Peace Awards

At the 2007 Hillsdale County Peace & Music Festival on August 11, Hillsdale County Green Richard Wunsch (left) was presented with the Ball Peace Award by Carolee Ball (right) for his "Outstanding efforts in the causes of peace and justice."

HC Green Doug Baker was also presented with a certificate of Appreciation for his regular attendance at the local weekly peace vigil. More pictures and information will soon be available online.


HC Greens Hold July Meeting
July 17, 2007

The Hillsdale County Greens recently held their monthly meeting on Monday, July 16 at the HIllsdale Annex. The fate of the recent CAFO bills in the state legislature was discussed at length, and the HC Greens will continue to monitor developments. Themes for the HC Greens table at the Peace Festival were again reviewed and volunteers were confirmed to staff it. Announcements included Green Party participation in upcoming events like Peace Day In The Part in Adrian on July 21, the Labor Day Parade in Detroit on September 3 and the Dally In The Alley on September 8, also in Detroit.


HC Greens Hold June Meeting
June 19, 2007

The Hillsdale County Greens recently held their monthly meeting on Monday, June 18 at at the Hillsdale Annex. Promotional materials and themes were more fully developed for the Green Party table at the upcoming Peace Festival, and volunteers were identified to pass out GP promotional flyers at the Hillsdale July 4th Parade. It was also agreed that more aggressive recruiting is needed to add new members to the local and fill the Treasurer and Secretary (now vacant due to Minerva Farnsworth's recent move) positions. Chair Doug Baker will take minutes on an interim basis.


HC Greens Hold May Meeting

On May 21 the Hillsdale County Greens held their monthly meeting at the Hillsdale Annex. Doug Baker gave a report on the May 19 Green Party of Michigan State Membership Meeting held in Flint (see the May 22 report on this page for more info). More info for review was provided by Jenny Halloin regarding the issue of local CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations). With the Peace Fest fast approaching and the 2008 election cycle already in swing, efforts will be made via the GPMI contacts database to reach out to more Hillsdale residents to encourage them to join the Greens.


Michigan Greens Meet In Flint
May 22, 2007

The Michigan Green Party held their quarterly State Membership Meeting on Saturday, May 19 in Flint, Michigan. The primary agenda was election of state party officers and plans of action for the upcoming political cycle. The new Green Party of Michigan officers are:

The GPMI also decided to provide financial support to the campaigns of Green Party members Hal Newnan (Warren City Council) and Aaron Stuttman (U.S. Congress 8th District). Financial support was also approved for the legal defense fund of Rev. Pinkney, the civil rights leader railroaded in Benton Harbor (for more info, visit the BANCO website).

The membership also approved official GPMI endorsements of the following: the statewide medical marijuana petition that will soon be circulated by the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care; a resolution encouraging US admission to the World Court; and a proposal for a Michigan Carbon Tax crafted by the Sierra Club.


Annex Discussion Series
April 28, 2007

The next installment in the Annex Discussion Series, a debate on the current occupation of Palestine, will be presented on Friday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hillsdale Annex, 98 N. Broad Street. Panelists will include Henry Herskovitz, Jewish peace activist; Aimee Smith, 2006 Green Party candidate for Congress; Josiah Ryan, Hillsdale College student and Jeremy Urban, Hillsdale College Senior. The debate will be moderated by Richard Wunsch, Chair of the Hillsdale County Coalition for Peace & Justice.

The Hillsdale County Greens held their regularl monthly meeting at the Hillsdale Annex on Monday, April 16, 2007, where they discussed the next installment of the Annex Discussion Series, as well as HC Greens participation in the upcoming 2007 Hillsdale County Peace Fest. Music lineup coming together for 2007 Peace Fest

While speakers are currently being lined up for this year's Hillsdale County Peace Festival, the musical entertainment is already shaping up quite nicely. "Chairman Ralph" Heibutzki will return to Hillsdale once again to lend his lyrical political and social commentary, and regular local favorite The Subliminal Kid (Tom Sylvia from Ann Arbor) and his Cowcatchers will bring their congenial blend of rock, folk and blues to the stage. The Kid may also have a few interesting stories to tell! Also appearing will be Murrow's Boys, an accoustic folk, rock and blues trio; Sean Magwire, an accoustic pop, folk and rock artist; and Rachanee, a Christian pop, folk and rock artist.


2007 Hillsale Peace Fest confirmed

The reservation of the Carl Fast Memorial Park in Jonesville has been confirmed by the Village Council for August 11, 2007. The Hillsdale County Greens plan on playing a significant role in this year's festival, and invite all interested individuals and groups to attend. Greens discuss elections, State Membership Meeting, Peace Fest

Meeting on March 12 at the Reading home of newest member Carolee Ball, The HIllsdale County Greens were given a follow-up to the recent Annex Discussion Series by Richard Wunsch and a report from the Green Party of Michigan's January 24-25 State Membership Meeting by Doug Baker. Also discussed were plans for a possible 7th District Caucus in the near future, most likely to be held in Jackson. Outreach efforts -- most importantly the 2007 Peace Festival, scheduled for August 11 -- were also considered.

It was also decided that the HC Greens will meet regularly on the third Monday of each month.


HC Greens sponsor Annex Discussion Series
February 26, 2007

This Friday, March 2, 2007, the Hillsdale County Greens will join the Hillsdale County Coalition for Peace & justice in sponsoring the inaugural event of the Hillsdale Annex Discussion Series, entitled "Palestine 2005 -- The Arrogance of Occupation." The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the HIllsdale Annex, 98 N. Broad Street in Hillsdale. Richard Wunsch will begin the event with a brief history of the Jewish diaspora, from the time of Jesus to the birth of Zionism. Henry Herskovitz will follow with a first-hand account of the current occupation of the Palestinian territories, based on his numerous trips to Israel and the occupied territories. An open discussion with the audience will follow. The event is free and open to the public.


Hillsdale County Greens discuss educational, political & outreach efforts

Meeting at the Hillsdale Annex, the Hillsdale County Greens considered a number of future agenda items. First is the Annex Discussion Series, where the HC Greens will sponsor an informative discussion of the Israeli occupation of Palestine within an historical context. Also considered were efforts to coordinate with the Tamarack Greens local for the 2008 elections, possible themes for the Green Party's presence at the 2007 Hillsdale Peace Festival and ideas for outreach to the local community.

The HC Greens will also closely monitor the legal disputes arising over local Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), which are in violation of Michigan’s Natural Resources & Environmental Protection Act. Hillsdale forms local Green Party Chapter

The Hillsdale County Greens are proud to announce the formation of a local chapter of the Greeen Party of Michigan (GPMI). Over the course of two preliminary meetings, bylaws were reviewed and approved, oficers and representatives to the State Central Committee (SCC) of the GPMI were selected, and plans were discussed for future activities of the local.
